What is the Basic Service under development about?

Accounting4NFDI aims to develop a federated, standards-based accounting framework that enables transparent, FAIR-compliant tracking of resource usage across the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). As research increasingly relies on distributed digital infrastructures (e.g., storage, compute, AAI, data and license services), understanding and documenting usage is critical for cost estimation, planning, and sustainability. The project builds on existing expertise and tools from national and European initiatives (e.g., de.NBI Cloud, bwCloud, EOSC, FURMS, openCost, AUDITOR), analyzing standards and protocols for resource accounting. It will develop concepts, pilots, and metadata models for various resource types, integrating with NFDI AAI and aligning with international efforts. A structured incubator process will guide prototype development and community involvement.

Goals of the Initialisation phase

The working concept for Accounting4NFDI revolves around two main objectives: first, to create a comprehensive overview of resource types used within the NFDI; and second, to assist providers in managing these resources efficiently by offering tools, as well as monitoring and accounting services. To accomplish these objectives, we have identified four key goals: (1) establish standards for describing resource consumption; (2) develop an overview through a resource type registry; (3) offer tools and features for accounting within current platforms as PoC and (4) facilitate standardized reporting of resource usage statistics as PoC.

Planned duration (current phase)

Initialisation Phase: 01.02.2026 – 31.01.2027
